Veteran Actor Farooq Sheikh Passes Away

Popular 70s and 80s actor Farooq Sheikh passed away, late Friday night, while holidaying in Dubai, after suffering from a sudden heart attack. A family member confirmed the news.

The mild mannered, much loved actor who contributed to all platforms of performing arts; movies, theatre and television, as well as to the movement of Parallel Cinema in Indian film making, was well known for his roles in Satyajit Ray's Shatranj Ke Khiladi, Yash Chopra's Noorie, Muzaffar Ali's Umrao Jaan and Sai Paranjpye's Chashme Buddoor to name a few. His easy banter and lethargic camaraderie with actress Deepti Naval; both off screen and on screen, also earned them as one of Indian cinema's most loved couples.

Mr. Sheikh was actively involved in many stage productions, most famously Feroz Abbas Khan's Tumhari Amrita, with actress Shabana Azmi. He also worked in television serials such as Shrikant on DoorDarshan, Chamatkaar on Sony TV, Ji Mantriji on Star Plus and most recently Do Dil Ek Jaan on Life OK. The multifaceted actor also went on to hosting Zee TV's popular celebrity talk show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai in 2006.

The actor was seen earlier this year in three releases; Listen... Amaya with Deepti Naval, Club 60 with Sarika and one of 2013's big hits Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, where he played actor Ranbir Kapoor's father.

The actor leaves behind his wife Rupa Jain and daughters; Shaista and Sanaa.
